Tips to Heal Acne Scars and Fight Acne with Household Supplies

Products to fight acne, prevent it, or deal with its scars have flooded the market, and advertisements for these products are everywhere in the media. Many of these items promise quick fixes and renewed self-confidence – for a price. And that price is usually costly. Fortunately the average home is well-stocked with acne treatments that do not rely on salicylic acid or peroxide.

Home remedies for acne scars or the treatment of acne rely on three principles. The first is that acne is caused by dead skin cells and sebum stopping up pores, and uses substances to draw out the pus and pore obstructions and dry the pimples, shrinking them. The second principle is that inflammation is one of the disfiguring aspects of blemishes, and calls for ways to reduce the swelling and reddening. Last is that the worst acne cases are not only inflamed but infected, and seeks to cleanse the skin. Some of the remedies may be surprising, and each does not work equally for everyone, so it pays to try several.

Toothpaste – This is one of the most common and perhaps more startling common remedies. It must be paste, not gel. A dab on each blemish will work to dry it out overnight.

Tea bags – After they are cool enough to touch, after steeping, let the bag rest on each problem area 3 to 5 minutes.

Oatmeal and yogurt – Combine plain, natural yogurt and oatmeal into a thick paste, and apply evenly over troubled spots. Let it dry. Then wash the paste off gently with room temperature water and pat dry.

Aloe Vera – Whether you grow your own plant and snap part off to use the aloe fresh or buy it, aloe is a soothing, cooling answer to painful dry skin that will help hasten healing and reduce irritated areas.

Ice – Pressing an ice cube against each large pimple will help shrink it, and passing ice over the whole problem area will shrink pores, making them less noticeable.

Tomatoes – Take the paste of fresh, ripe tomatoes and apply to skin to cleanse and help heal scarred skin. Wash off after an hour.

Garlic cloves – Peel cloves and rub over skin, then rinse.

Honey – Use a dab of honey on blemishes to help draw out and fight infections.

In addition to these and other remedies, never forget to drink plenty of water, avoid touching troubled skin, and wash daily with water and mild soap. Store bought solutions are not the only way to find out how to clear up acne.
