Moles can either be ugly and unattractive, or unique and personal. Some who have them don’t do a thing, others who do want to have them removed immediately. This is because the mole could actually be a melanoma, which can cause skin cancer.

First of all, moles do not cause cancer. People who have them shouldn’t be immediately paranoid and have them all removed, though having them checked is not a bad idea. Moles are simply benign tumors that come from melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin. Unfortunately, there is no definite explanation as to why melanocytes are changed into moles, in addition, there is no known reason why moles turn cancerous.

Science, however, knows the signs and symptoms. It is when the mole’s cells multiply and grow uncontrollably, causing numerous side-effects like discoloration of the mole, an irregular shape, bleeding, fluid excretion, hypersensitivity, or a fast rate of growth. Usually, moles have a constant color, shape, and size, so if a mole looks, feels, and acts different than the others, then this is the time the mole should be checked by a doctor.

What the doctor will do is to get a piece of the mole and perform a biopsy on it. The biopsy is a procedure that will tell the doctor whether or not the mole is actually cancerous. If it is found to be as such, the doctor will know the next step, usually involving mole removal. The method of removal usually depends on the severity and sensitivity of the case, in order to ensure the best results possible.

If it is not cancerous, and the patient still wishes to remove the mole, the doctor can still perform the mole removal procedure, or the patient can just use any of the over-the-counter mole removal products on the market today.
